Eight-year-old Autumn is visiting her grandparents in Ashbrooke, Alabama when she learns that her parents were two of the seventeen victims of a shooting in a rural church in Mississippi, and her grandparents must take her in to raise her. Life isn’t easy dealing with her emotionally and physically abusive grandfather, and she must navigate her way through life as a brown girl in a predominantly white Haynesboro.
Her journey to becoming a social worker is a hard one, and when Autumn achieves her title, she has a responsibility to help children that are going through turmoil in their daily lives, turmoil that she finds familiar and haunting as she still searches for a place in the world. She must learn how to cope with the hardships of being an outsider looking in on abuse and being helpless to stop it.
Among the Spider Lilies is a story brown women will be able to connect with, while those who struggle with healing from abusive relationships will find comfort in Autumn’s journey to recovery.
